Bailey and Mike chose Tommy Thompson Park in Toronto for their winter maternity photo shoot adventure and believe it or not I’d never heard of this park. We lived in midtown Toronto for over 6 years and I’d never been here or heard it mentioned and yet it turned out to be a super cool location for a maternity session with the water, marina, trails and city skyline views. It definitely handed us some pretty cool backdrops to capture such a special time and I’ll be adding it to my list of go-to Toronto photography locations for sure.
Bailey was an absolute trooper! She was around 26 weeks pregnant and she totally rocked her dress and shawl outfit despite the chilly temperatures. The way she styled herself for her maternity shoot worked great against the frozen icy beach and dramatic edgy rocks. Getting to this spot was more of a challenge then we first thought as even the tiny pebbles were covered in a sheet of ice. So a bit of a play on angles and lots of help from Mike meant we could still use it and pull off these super wintery wonderland shots.
So many couples steer clear of outdoor winter maternity sessions because of the elements. I absolutely love it when I get a couple who are totally up for braving the snow, chilly temperatures or adventure that comes with the winter sessions. We just throw a flask of hot chocolate in the bag, load ourselves up with coats and mittens that we just throw to the side or hang on a tree when we find a cool spot to take photos and quickly pop them all back on again to continue the journey. It’s actually a lot of fun and you end up with some pretty gorgeous photos as a result.
So if you’re expecting a new baby and not sure if you fancy heading out in the February cold I would urge you to throw caution to the wind and embrace this awesome season Ontario offers us.
