2 Steps Every Bride Should Take To Ensure They've Teamed Up With The Right Photographer || CopperRed Photography
I totally get it, the options for your wedding photographer are insane. If you don’t have a recommendation from a friend then most likely you head on over to good ole Google. The list that appears before your eyes is endless and you can kinda feel overwhelmed very fast, or at least I knew that’s exactly how I felt 11 years ago when I too was on the hunt lol.
Fast forward 11 years and now I’m a wedding photographer, go figure lol. Something I’ve learnt is that I’m not everyone’s photographer. I’m honestly not and I think that’s a great thing. I know my couples, they’re the ones who are a little on the adventurous side, don’t really sweat the small things, love to walk barefoot on the beach and are looking for a more relaxed, unintrusive approach. Having a deep sense of who are my couples means that I team up with those couples and it’s a hit.
Equally I feel it’s important for you to know the right photog for you and I’ve got 2 steps you can follow that’ll help you figure that out.
Step ONE - Meet In Person
I LOVE to meet my couples for coffee (okay let’s be honest I’m british so if I say ‘Let’s meet for coffee’ I mean tea), wine or a cold cider on a summer night. It’s not until you meet face to face that you can really tell how you mix. Is it a recipe for success, do you feel like old friends just catching up and sharing all your wedding day plans with her? Do they feel like someone you could have present at the most intimate and private moments of your day? Putting on your dress with your mum, during your first look, in those moments leading up to you walking down the aisle to the man of your dreams. Are they someone you feel comfortable around?
Your photographer will be with you for 90% of your day so having that level of comfort is crazy important. Just imagine doing your wedding day with someone capturing it who feels like one of the girls? Fun right? So once you’ve narrowed down your favourites book up some coffee dates, spend time getting to know them and how they work. They say we know if we like someone within a few moments right, so imagine how much you could tell from a 30-60 minute get together.
STEP TWO - Full Gallery Viewing
Websites, IG accounts, and other portfolios are our showreel, our highlights, our best bits. Be sure to ask for access to a couple of full wedding galleries so that you can truly get a sense of how they capture a love story from start to end. It’s easy to fall in love with a couple of shots from an IG account but it’s more important you fall equally in love with an entire approach to capturing your day and the way to do that is to see full galleries.
An extra tip on this one would be to try to ask for access to full galleries from the same season, or if you are looking to book them for a destination wedding then to see that type of gallery. That way you will get a real sense for how they capture with those colours and tones in mind. Photographing in snow is very different from photographing and editing full sun, beach weddings.
As always I hope this has been helpful and given you a couple of practical ways you can be sure to book up with your dream photog and not be left disappointed. I can’t wait to share more and more tips, tricks and advice to help you plan out your dream wedding.
